How it works
The percentage increase formula measures how much a value has grown relative to its starting point. It works from the original value, not the new one, so the result is always based on the first number.
(new − original) ÷ original × 100 From 50 to 75 = (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50% From 120 to 90 = (90 − 120) ÷ 120 × 100 = −25%
When you apply a percentage instead of comparing two values, the tool multiplies the starting number by 1 plus the percent as a decimal. That makes it easy to calculate a 15% raise, discount, or fee.

Frequently asked questions
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. In this case: (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50%.
Yes. Enter the original value and the new value to see the percent increase, or use apply mode to add a percentage to any starting amount.
Use (new − original) ÷ original × 100. If the result is negative, it is a percentage decrease.
Percentage increase = (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100. The result is positive for increases and negative for decreases.
Because percentage changes apply to the current value. 100 + 50% = 150, then 150 − 50% = 75, so the values do not return to the start.
