How it works
Counts update as you type. Each figure uses a simple, fixed rule, which is worth knowing when a count has to match a strict limit.
| Figure | Rule |
|---|---|
| Words | Groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks |
| Characters | Every character, including spaces and line breaks |
| Sentences | Pieces of text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark |
| Paragraphs | Blocks of text separated by a blank line |
| Reading time | Words ÷ 200, rounded, with a minimum of one minute |
Because sentences are split at every full stop, decimals such as 3.14 and abbreviations such as “e.g.” add to the sentence count. A hyphenated term counts as one word. Top keywords lists the eight most frequent words after common ones like “the” and “and” are left out, with each word’s share of the total.
