Sales Tax Calculator
Calculate sales tax both ways. Enter a pre-tax amount and rate to get the tax and total, or switch to reverse mode to pull the net price and tax out of a tax-inclusive total. Perfect for receipts, invoices and quick pricing checks — all client-side.
Examples
Amount $100, tax rate 8.25%, Add mode
Net $100.00, Tax $8.25, Total $108.25
How it works
“Add tax” starts from a pre-tax price: tax = amount × rate ÷ 100. “Extract tax” starts from a total that already includes tax and works backwards: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).
Add: 100.00 at 8.25% → tax 8.25, total 108.25 Extract: 108.25 at 8.25% → net 100.00, tax 8.25
The common mistake when working backwards is to take 8.25% off the total. That gives 99.32, not 100, because the tax was charged on the smaller pre-tax price. The calculator takes one rate, so add state, county and city rates together before entering them.

Frequently asked questions
In Extract mode the amount you enter is treated as the tax-inclusive total. Net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and tax = total − net.
Yes. The calculation is the same for any percentage-based sales tax, VAT or GST — just enter the applicable rate.
