Weighted GPA Calculator

Add each class with its credits, letter grade and course type — Regular, Honors or AP/IB — and get both your weighted GPA (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, up to a 5.0 scale) and your unweighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale. Plus and minus grades are supported, and every class is weighted by its credits. All math runs in your browser.

Examples

Input · AP adds 1.0 and Honors adds 0.5 to the grade points before averaging.
AP class: A · Honors class: B · Regular class: A-
Output
Weighted GPA 4.07 · Unweighted GPA 3.57

How it works

Each class contributes its grade points multiplied by its credits. GPA is the total of those divided by the total credits. The weighted GPA adds a bonus to the grade points of harder classes before multiplying: +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB.

The scale runs from A (4.0) down to F (0.0) in steps of plus and minus; there is no A+ above 4.0. A failing grade gets no Honors or AP bonus. Schools differ in the bonus they give and in which classes count, so use your school’s own rules for an official figure.

Frequently asked questions

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for every class, so an A is always 4.0. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes — usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. That is why weighted GPAs can go above 4.0.

The standard US 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to F = 0.0. Honors and AP/IB bonuses are added on top, giving a maximum of 5.0 for an A in an AP or IB class.

For each class, take the grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …), add 0.5 if it is Honors or 1.0 if it is AP/IB, and multiply by the class credits. Add those up and divide by your total credits. This calculator does all of that as you type.

Many colleges recalculate GPA with their own formula, and often look at both. Weighted GPA shows the difficulty of your schedule; unweighted GPA makes schools easier to compare. It is worth knowing both, which is why this tool shows them side by side.

No. Most schools only add the bonus to passing grades, so an F counts as 0.0 even in an AP or Honors class. This calculator follows that rule.

Weighting rules vary between schools — some add +1.0 for Honors or give no bonus below a C. This calculator uses the most common system (+0.5 Honors, +1.0 AP/IB). Check your school handbook if your numbers need to match an official transcript.
