How it works

Speech is produced by your browser’s built-in speech engine. The voice list is whatever your browser and operating system provide, which is why it differs between Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, and between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

  • Rate runs from 0.5× to 2×; 1× is the voice’s normal speed.
  • Pitch runs from 0 to 2; 1 is the normal pitch.
  • Pause and Resume keep your place; Stop ends the reading.

Most voices are installed on your device and work offline. A few, such as the “Google” voices in Chrome, are produced by the browser maker’s online service, so pick a system voice for private text. The tool plays audio only; it cannot save the speech as an MP3 or other file.

Frequently asked questions

Available voices come from your browser and OS. Some load asynchronously — they may appear a moment after the page opens.

If SpeechSynthesis is unavailable, the tool shows a warning and still lets you enter text, but playback won't work.
