Compound Annual Growth Rate — the constant yearly rate that would take the beginning value to the ending value over the period. It smooths out volatility into one comparable number.

Because of compounding and volatility drag. A +50% year followed by a −50% year averages 0%, but you actually lost 25% — CAGR reflects the real outcome.
